Diocese of Achonry

Visiting Priests from abroad Policy

Priests visiting from abroad are always welcome in the Diocese of Achonry!  However, as is well documented, the necessary documentation must be in place to ensure that best practice is followed.   If a priest is visiting the Diocese of Achonry from another country to officiate at a wedding, funeral, baptism, or any other liturgical celebration, he will require a “Letter of Good Standing” from his Diocese/Order/Congregation.  This needs to be forwarded to Bishop’s House, Convent Rd., Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, F45 H004.

If the priest is remaining for a period after the wedding, funeral, baptism or other liturgical celebration, or if he is visiting the Diocese, (e.g., on holiday), and wishes to minister in any way, as well as the Letter of Good Standing, the statutory requirement is that he will also need to be Garda Vetted (Police Vetting).  To do this, he will need to contact the Safeguarding Office at Bishop’s House (address above) at the earliest opportunity to initiate the process.

If there are any questions or queries, please feel free to contact the Safeguarding Office at +353 94 98 0034 or safeguarding@achonrydiocese.org.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

Sincerely,

+Paul Dempsey,

Bishop of Achonry.
