Detective Garda Colm Horkan, R.I.P.

STATEMENT BY FATHER DERMOT MEEHAN, DIOCESAN ADMINISTRATOR, DIOCESE OF ACHONRY
ON THE DEATH OF DETECTIVE GARDA COLM HORKAN

Death always brings pain, leaves a major void in the lives of loved ones and raises questions. When death is unexpected and, as in the case of Detective Garda Colm Horkan, so tragic and unnecessary how much greater the loss felt, and the questions raised.

On behalf of the diocese of Achonry – its priests, deacons, religious and laity, I wish to express our deepest sympathy to Colm’s father, sister and brothers, his wider family, to his Garda colleagues, his GAA Clubmates, his many friends and his hometown of Charlestown.

We acknowledge Colm’s selfless and giving commitment to The State, An Garda Siochána and to the communities he served over the past twenty-four years.

In face of tragedy and uncertainty, we place our trust in the Lord and, in that trust and to the Lord, we bring our prayers for all at this time.

May Detective Garda Colm Horkan, a guradian of the peace, rest now in the peace he lived and died to protect.

Bishop-Elect Paul Dempsey

Fr Paul Dempsey

Father Paul Dempsey, Bishop-elect of the Diocese of Achonry has issued the following statement today:

“It is with regret that we have had to postpone my Episcopal Ordination as Bishop of Achonry which was planned for Sunday 19th April. I requested the postponement in light of the Coronavirus pandemic. I have asked that the ceremony be rescheduled until sometime in the Summer. This decision has been difficult but it would not have been appropriate to proceed with the ordination at this time.

The decision has been made in consultation with His Excellency Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okola and the Diocese of Achonry.  I am grateful to Archbishop Okolo and to the priests, religious and faithful of the Diocese of Achonry for their patience and understanding as we deal with the unprecedented consequences of Covid-19 in our country and in our world.

I am grateful to Bishop Denis Nulty, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, who has asked me to continue for the moment as parish priest in Newbridge Parish.

I ask for your prayers at this time for all those affected by the coronavirus pandemic.”

Ends:

Fr Dermot Meehan is Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese and continues in that role of leadership and pastoral care of our diocese up to the moment Bishop-Elect Dempsey is ordained.

Public Celebration of Masses

SUSPENSION OF CELEBRATION OF PUBLIC MASSES

13th March 2020

In line with national and governmental efforts to stem the spread of Covid-19, the decision is reluctantly taken to cancel all public Masses in the Diocese of Achonry including Vigil and Sunday Masses this weekend up to and including March 29th.

Priests will continue to celebrate Masses in their parishes but not open to the public. The intentions of all parishioners and all affected by the current difficult and challenging situation will be remembered.

Churches will be open during the days for personal visits and prayer. All faithful are asked to pray for a speedy and safe outcome to the difficulties posed by Covid-19.

Funerals, weddings and Baptisms will continue to be celebrated. However numbers attending will be restricted to the maximum 100, in accordance with instructions received.

Fr Dermot Meehan, Dioceasan Administrator of Achonry, calls for widespread prayer and asks that all people act for the common good and promotion of healthcare. He also asks for prayers for all on the frontline, engaging with those in most and direct need.

Webcams are installed in a number of our churches and Mass may be accessed in this way and through local radio. Please share in these Masses and be united in prayer.

Priesthood in Achonry

Our Bishop-Elect, Paul Dempsey, comes to us as one of the youngest priests in our diocese.

Looking at our situation, as it stands today, including retired priests, the age-profile of our priests is:

  • six over the age of 80
  • seven aged between 70-80
  • ten aged between 60-70,
  • ten aged between 50-60,
  • three aged between 40-50 (four when Bishop-Elect Dempsey joins us)
  • and nobody under 40.

There are twenty-three parishes in the diocese and fifty churches.  At present there are 25 priests in Parish Ministry.

There is no doubt but that we are heading to a point where changes will have to be addressed – indeed, we have most likely passed that point.

There must however, remain hope

As we welcome a new bishop, might it be a time to encourage a-fresh and pray renewed, that some might hear God’s call to serve the church of Achonry as a Diocesan Priest?

Fr Paul Kivlehan is our Vocations Director.  He may be contacted at the Presbytery, Ballaghaderreen or on vocations@achonrydiocese.org
