Bishop-Elect Paul Dempsey

On Monday, January 27th 2020, Pope Francis appointed Fr Paul Dempsey, a priest of the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin, to be the Bishop of Achonry.  The announcement was made by the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, at Mass in The Cathedral of The Annunciation and St Nathy.

UPDATE MARCH 19th, 2020 Bishop-Elect Dempsey was due to be ordained bishop on Sunday April 19th, however due to the ongoing efforts to stem the spread of the COVID-19 Virus, the decision has been taken to defer the ordination until a date later in the summer.  Until then, Fr Paul has been asked by his own bishop (Bishop Denis Nulty) to continue in his role as Parish Priest of Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

The Principal Consecrator will be the Archbishop of Tuam, Michael Neary, assisted by the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Denis Nulty and the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo.
